Instagram has been getting every entrepreneur’s attention for too long. Yes, it can work for many of us ( would argue stories and DMs are the most valuable part of the platform for many solopreneurs) but there’s one content asset you are likely ignoring and shouldn’t be.
Your blog.
“Are blogs dead?” is a common question that we hear over and over again. No, they aren’t. Far from it. While the blogging industry has changed, along with Google, there’s still so much value in having a blog as a content asset.
I started blogging on my parenting blog 16 years ago and have been helping solopreneurs and small business owners create and write blogs for their businesses ever since. I’ve seen this industry change time and time again but blogs are still relevant.
Why it’s time to start a blog for your business
A blog is long-form content that has lasting impact. It’s what I call anchor content; a piece of content you can refer to, use in multiple ways, and benefit from long after it’s posted.
From SEO to repurposing, there’s a good chance that integrating blogging as part of your content strategy will see benefits in the short term and long term.
Here are just a few ways a blog can help your business:
And more!
You already have a blog; is it working for you?
If you already have a blog, there are a few ways to ensure it’s doing what you need it to for your content and business.
First, ensure they are optimized. This means formatted with headers and in a way that even mobile readers can read it. It also means strategically linking from your own website and external sources, plus answering the questions your audience wants to know.
You also need to make it easy for people to find your blog. Share the posts, often. Clients often will tell me they have shared their new post but then don’t continue to talk about it. Increase the sharing frequency. You can even set ads to directly go to blog posts.
If you have many posts after working on your business for many years, it’s time to do a blog review. Clean up posts that are relevant but out of date, or not optimized for SEO. Link back to older ones or newer ones that align. Remove ones that don’t fit what your messaging is etc.
The benefit of having a blog repository means that you always have content on hand. For future newsletters, podcast topics and guesting, video creation etc. You can reshare a relevant post from years ago without having to create something new.
