Social media marketing: Where you likely get stuck and what to do about it
There are a variety of reasons entrepreneurs and business owners get stuck with their content and social media marketing. You didn’t start your business to be a marketer, and yet, that’s become one of the biggest aspects of your job.
Over the many years of working with solopreneurs and business owners in the ever changing marketing landscape, I’ve noticed a few common areas people often get stuck with their social media planning and posting.
Read about each one below and see where you fit in, plus, find out the steps you can take to try and overcome it.
1- You aren’t sure how to use the tools to help you create your posts (canva, editing, IG features etc)
WHAT TO DO: Practice makes…posted. Don’t worry about perfection. Try a Canva template, post the reel to test it etc.
2-Your brand messaging or offer is unclear.
WHAT TO DO: Check your bio and landing page for your offer – is it clear? Is it easy to buy/work with you? What’s missing to create a ‘yes’. Then focus on your key brand words or phrases – are they showing up in your content? Adjust as needed.
3- You are overwhelmed at all the content options or ideas, or you don’t know what to create.
WHAT TO DO: You need a plan to help determine relevant, intentional content to create, for what platform, and frequency. Be authentic and show up in a way that works for you but start with simple: What do you want your audience to know right now? What do they need to know a month from now?
4- It takes too long or you can’t find the time to plan and create.
WHAT TO DO: It does that time and effort, let’s not pretend otherwise, but you can either outsource it or create a plan you can follow. Use templates, batch creating and scheduling as needed but having a clear plan will stop some of the decision fatigue.
5- Business is doing well so you don’t feel you need to market.
WHAT TO DO: This seems like a ‘great problem to have’ but the reality is, even when you are fully booked, marketing still matters. Your success now helps demonstrate your leadership and position as the go-to expert or leader. Make the time and treat your marketing like other aspects of your business: A priority.
6- You’ve been using social but it’s not working
WHAT TO DO: To really know if your social is working, you have to know your analytics and numbers and test/adjust as you create. Also, forget what ‘others’ are doing – focus on what you and your audience want for content. Measure against yourself, month to month, not others. Try to have fun too and remove the pressure.
You don’t have to stay stuck, but you do need to recognize where the true problem lies.
